Effective and Timely Management of Patients with T2DM: A Case-based Approach

Primary care clinicians in all settings are frequently not meeting guideline-recommended performance measures for diabetes. Many clinicians cite an improved understanding of the mechanisms of action of anti-hyperglycemic agents in the context of T2DM pathophysiology as an urgent educational need. The availability of numerous anti-hyperglycemic agents, in addition to the recent publication of cardiovascular outcomes results for some of the non-insulin therapies, warrant education for clinicians who are unclear on which therapies to initiate and how and when to appropriately intensify anti-hyperglycemic therapies. A contributor to poor patient outcomes is non-adherence to therapies, whether due to fear of injections, fear of side effects, or increased dosing frequency and/or pill burden.

Leading faculty in the field of T2DM management will help address these gaps in this clinically relevant, case-based, patient-centered educational activity. Throughout the activity, faculty will review current guideline recommendations and clinical-trial data pertaining to non-insulin therapies.

Learning Objectives

  • Assess the current understanding of the pathophysiology of T2DM and the targets of various anti-hyperglycemic therapies
  • Target the pathophysiological disturbances in patients with T2DM using mono- or combination therapies based on their efficacy and safety
  • Manage patients with T2DM optimally in accordance with the guideline recommendations
