Assessment and Management of COPD Patients in Primary Care: Tools and Technologies to Guide Treatment Decisions

COPD goes undiagnosed in as many as 60% of individuals with obstructive lung disease, while approximately two-thirds of those who are diagnosed do not receive long-acting maintenance therapy. In addition, those on treatment plans often fail to adhere to them. Education can help address these gaps through case-based discussions of guidelines, tools, and technologies proven to improve patient screening, individualize treatment decisions, and empower patients’ self-management.

Assessment and Management of COPD Patients in Primary Care: Tools and Technologies to Guide Treatment Decisions will provide clinicians with the most up-to-date evidence and guideline-based recommendations for treating COPD, with an emphasis on the use of validated patient screening tools, treatment decision aids, and patient self-management training and strategies.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify patients at high risk of COPD and perform proactive symptom assessment to detect previously undiagnosed COPD and determine severity of disease
  • Implement guideline-concordant assessment and management strategies, utilizing the PCG guide to clinical decision-making
  • Facilitate patient self-management by applying evidence-based strategies for maintenance pharmacotherapy and include non-pharmacological strategies, such as pulmonary rehabilitation, to reduce the risk of exacerbation and improve patient QoL

Target Audience

The intended audiences for this initiative include family medicine practitioners, internists, and other primary care providers.
